History

The Memorial Scholarship program was developed in 1998 to honor the children that we have lost to cancer.  By granting scholarships each year in their name, they will never be forgotten.

Eligibility

• Primarily for graduating high school seniors (current college students will also be considered).
• Any child, or sibling of a child, in the North Bay area (Sonoma, Napa, Marin, and Solano counties, or regular attendees of one of Children’s Cancer Community’s family support groups) who has, or has had, childhood cancer or cancer-related disease.
• Priority will be given to participants of our family support groups or other events, high school seniors, and cancer survivors respectively.

Applications

Applications must be postmarked by the last day of February each year.

Applications submitted after the deadline or incomplete will not be accepted.

Awards are announced by mid-April each year.

There is no “application form” but the following three items MUST be submitted:

• A cover letter explaining the applicant’s experiences, accomplishments, and goals.
• A copy of transcripts or a copy of the most current report card.
• A letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher or school administrator.

Letter of recommendation must be on school letterhead and may not be a copy from a previous year’s application.  Get this done early.  Applications will not be accepted without it.  The letter of recommendation and cover letter must be signed originals. Faxes and e-mails will not be accepted.

Determination of awards will be made based on a combination of academic achievement and community service (please address these in the cover letter) as well as the quality of the written application and personal interview.

Due to the competitive nature of the scholarship, applicants must carefully review and complete all of the application procedures as listed above.  Make sure that cover letters are signed and dated.

Awards will be determined by a consensus of the Memorial Scholarship Committee, with the amounts approved by the Board of Directors of Children’s Cancer Community.

Jack T. Morris Endowment

Beginning in 2008 some scholarships will be funded by a generous gift from the estate of Mr. Jack T. Morris.  Our Board of Directors has established an endowment to use the interest/dividends each year so that the scholarships can be permanently funded.  Please contact us if you would like to add your support to this legacy of educational assistance for our students.
